Just like a boss, if a coach tells you that his/her team is one big happy family, that is a red flag. I did not know that when I signed. Byers knows the sport, and he does a good job trying to encourage buy in from his new athletes. His staff cared about the well being of the team, but I don't think he acted in an ethical manner in my experience. We're talking I paid for health insurance we were required to have as athletes on his team, got injured during practice, was given no say in the treatment I might receive, and was stuck with a massive medical bill that his very expensive insurance wouldn't cover...as a 20 year old college student. Many college coaches seem to run their athletes into the ground the first year they're there, resulting in injuries and unhealthy attitudes. I think Byers is no exception. When I toured, Byers was adamant about the importance of academics to him. I don't believe he had a great understanding of the way learning at a higher level works. In fact, there was an overwhelming amount of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" between Byers and professors. I can honestly say that when I transferred to a different school, I was behind my classmates due to the preference given to athletes by professors. I wasn't encouraged to deeply understand material there, and I'm not entirely sure how they are considered an academically rigorous school. All this to say, when you visit, it's a facade. If you get there and don't drink the Kool-aid, everyone who does will be up against you, whether you've met them or not. Bad gas travels fast in a small Uni.
