I would recommend avoiding this coach at all cost. Kimberly Sutton was my college coach at Chico State for 3 consecutive years (2020-2023); each year the program and coaching staff spiraled more. On several occasions, Kimberly directly stated that academic achievement is held in high regard for this program, however her actions say otherwise. Kimberly constantly asks for players to make academic sacrifices for the program, all while stating to guardians and parents that academics are more important than soccer. Additionally, Kimberly frequently makes racist comments and body shaming comments to her own team, towards other teams, and towards her coworkers in the Athletic Department. At one point, she would refer to me and my roommates (Japanese, Philippino, and Mexican) as the 3 brown girls, even after we had expressed discomfort with this label. Additionally, she would have weekly weigh-ins for any player she BELIEVED was out of shape. Most of the time they were not, and as a result some of them developed eating disorders. It is no wonder as to why so many players quit each year (17 within the last year), and why she must recruit such large classes (12-15). Additionally, Kimberly attempts to turn players against each other, and even compare their personalities and overall character. Kimberly will attempt to make anyone she does not like out to be a villain on the team, which is extremely confusing when you believe you are in a trusting, supportive team environment. I began to play soccer when I was 4 years old and not once, until I came to play for Kimberly, did my love for soccer faulter. Additionally, I feel as if I was a better, more skilled player prior to coming to Chico State (Kimberly was able to coach the talent OUT of me). Kimberly has a major talent for sucking a player's love for their sport out of them; this may be her only talent, besides not wearing sunscreen. Personally, my parents begged me to quit for months, as they saw the effect this coach had on my mental and physical health (this is not uncommon for players on this team). If you are a player who chooses to associate with Kimberly Sutton, I wish you the best of luck! It is a wonder that this woman is allowed to coach, and a larger wonder as to why she is able to interact with society overall.
